SisterSpace 2015

Letter from the President - Countdown to the Weekend!

Hi everyone,
Are you having a good summer? It's hard to believe that SisterSpace is less than a week away. Time flies but here in the Planning Committee, we're working feverishly to get all last minute details locked down and ready for your arrival.

Register! Day passes, Saturday Arrival and Gate registration is still open. We are currently in the process of sending out confirmation cards so anyone registering after today will not be receiving a written confirmation of registration or cabin assignment until they arrive at camp. We will try to respond w/ a quick email to let you know we have gotten your registration. Please do register ahead of time even if you are paying the gate price. The earlier the information comes in, the less scrambling we have to do to make sure you're taken care of fully. Help us help you!

Reinvent! Our theme this year is ReSisterSpace and we want to use this time to Recharge, Rejuvenate, Resist, Rebel, Renew and have Respect among others. With that in mind, we are introducing our Safe Space Contract which lays out our SisterSpace Values and Community Agreements. We will be asking all attendees to read it and sign as a way of honoring each other and the Space. A copy of the Contract will be posted on our website and on the brochure announcement as well as available at the registration table when you arrive in September. We are also offering campers the options of color coded wristbands which will be a visible sign of their personal level of consent.

Rejoice! We have so many exciting things planned such as our incredible Opening Ceremony that is being kicked off with a drum session led by the women of Music Over Matter followed by a Parade to the stage. Please plan to bring your musical instruments and signs (more on that later). Come prepared to peruse our weekend long Silent Auction, and our premiere Sisters of SisterSpace Gallery featuring artists from within the SisterSpace community. Take in the experience of our brand new Sweat Lodge and revel in our always awesome performers and stimulating workshops. I can't wait to share them with you. Some of our workshops this year will have limited space so please make sure to stop by the Workshops area near Camper Services to sign up ahead of time. Speaking of workshops...

Renew! your sense of passion, your love of learning and freedom to be creative. From creative and empowerment sessions led by performers Holly Near, Heather Mae, Pandora Scooter, and Sha’Ifa Mami Watu to our popular OD/YQ, Open Mic and the Women of Color Forum, you'll find many avenues for self-exploration. Workshop choices continue with camper led offerings dealing with car maintenance, body workouts, self improvement, hypnotism, healing, activism, hobbies and so much more. We even have a Craft Beer tasting workshop. Come prepared with your own six pack selections to share and exchange. Growlers, crowlers, grumbles and grunts also acceptable for tasting purposes!

Recipes! Just kidding but on the serious side... We are putting together a SisterSpace cookbook as a fundraiser. Please bring to your Weekend any of your favorite recipes you'd like to see included. We will have recipe sheets that you can fill out.

Reimagine! Check out our Artistic Seminar led by poet Sha’Ifa Mami Watu based on an excerpt of her highly praised work Rough Ground. This 2 hr session combines haiku poetry, and painting through collaborative creative interpretations. Other Art shack offerings - celebrate your body with our Body Painting, Body Casting, and Body Marbling sessions. Our Sip and Paint Workshop is a great way to socialize and meet other people while being coached by two of our SisterSpace artists (sign up at Camper Services). The Monument Quilt is back! Stop by to share in creating this moving tribute to survivors of rape and abuse. And don't forget to bring your white attire for our tie-dying sessions!

Rebel! Have you heard about our SisterSpace Chorus? Following in the footsteps of MILCK and the women from the March on Washington, we will be sending "I Can't Be Quiet" lyrics and audio files to anyone interested in being part of a SisterSpace Chorus for the Weekend. Participants will rehearse on their own at home then come together during the Weekend for one rehearsal before performing on Saturday night before the Holly Near performance. Sign up at

Revel! We have so much planned. On your part, we ask you to bring your musical instruments for informal jam sessions as well as planned activities.

Regroup! Bring along those softball gloves and appropriate shoes! We are hoping to host mini softball and basketball tournaments as well as our regular flag football game and a horseshoe pit.

Reclaim! Decorations! The best decorated cabin wins a prize!!!! We are also encouraging you to bring (or create at our Art Shack) signs to express yourself at our Opening Ceremony! They can be signs of love, support, activism, empowerment, memorial etc. we want you to make SisterSpace your Space.

Reconnect! We know that not everybody has easy access to transportation and it is sometimes difficult to make your way to SisterSpace. As a way of connecting with each other, if you need a ride or are willing to offer one to the Weekend, please post a comment on our Facebook page with the #SisterSpaceRideShare. You can post it either on our SisterSpace Weekend business page, our SisterSpace of the Delaware Valley business page or my personal SisterSpace page, Jo-Ann SSpace Pres McIntyre. As a matter of fact, just go ahead and like the business pages and friend the personal one. It's an excellent way to get updates and stay connected to the SisterSpace community all year round. Last of all but most definitely not least...

Redirect! In order to make this Weekend be the very best it can be, we have accumulated a long shopping list. We are trying to defray some of the costs by reaching out to the community to see if anyone has any of the items needed and would be willing to donate them to us. You can view the list of what is needed here. In lieu of in-kind donations, we could also use gift cards towards suggested stores. In return, your name will be published in our program on our Contributors page (not to mention also being held dearly in our hearts). Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Review!! Please check our website and Facebook for news and previews of the Weekend! Don't forget to register and bring a friend! Look into becoming a Weekend Sponsor or buying a program ad for your business, organization or even just to express good wishes to all! Stay well and I'll see you in September!

Sincerely, Jo-Ann
